Q:
The Pilates classes are as agreeable as enforced muscle fatigue can ever be.
This sentence is basically like'A is as pleasant as unpleasant B can ever be'.
To me this kind of usage is circuitous and paradoxical...how you native speakers can make inference this sentence is ironic?
what's the function of 'ever'in this sentence.
Does this sentence contain'as...as...can be'structure?
Can you give me some examples like this?
Here is my example'He is as handsome as a toad can ever be'. I can understand why my sentence is humorous,I still can't find the first sentence funny....
Many thanks for your help!

A:
Because the adjective 'handsome' is 'positive', so to speak.
As for your comment about the first sentence being contrived, I don't think so. The reason is that 'enforced muscle fatigue' is the speaker's 'synonym' for pilates. In essence, the speaker is equating (or reducing) pilates to enforced muscle fatigue, which makes it 'obvious' that it's disagreeable.
An equivalent would be something like 'Getting an injection is as enjoyable as sticking a sharp piece of metal through your skin can ever be'.

A:
You can tell the sentence is intended as humorous because “enforced muscle fatigue” does not match well with “agreeable”. They are incongruous.
The birthday party went well - it was as enjoyable as being in a room full of screaming children can ever be.
Putting some music on while you clean the bathroom at least makes scrubbing the tiles about as pleasant as it can ever be.
