Q:
Qual è la differenza tra Theresa May didn't look just exhausted. She looked as if she had given up. e Theresa May didn't look just exhausted. She looked as if she gave up. ?
A:
For sentence #1, “given up” gives a connotation that Theresa May’s efforts is done in the present. Hence, after all her efforts now, she has now given up. However for sentence #2, “gave up” gives a connotation that her efforts were done in the past. Hence, she now gave up. With a lack of context, both sentences are correct and can be used.
Q:
Qual è la differenza tra Theresa May didn't look just exhausted. She looked as if she had given up. e Theresa May didn't look just exhausted. She looked as if she gave up. ?
A:
The meaning in this case is the same because of the context, specifically because of the first sentence, which indicates that Theresa was in that state at that very moment. If the first sentence was suppressed, the meaning would change slightly. In the first situation 'she looked as if she had given up' would mean she gave up from that time on. The second sentence, on the other hand, 'she looked as if she gave up', means that she may have started giving up in the past, before you noticed she started giving up. It is a very slight difference and sometimes it can even mean the same though. I hope I made it a bit clearer:)

Theresa May's accent sounds very sophisticated. Isn't it considered as the Queen's English? I'm curious to know how it sounds to native English speakers.
A:
the queen's English is more pronounced ("posh") than how most people speak and most people wouldn't consider it a strong accent. there are many regional accents and you can tell the difference between them quite clearly e.g cockney (London - as heard in the TV soap "Eastenders"), Yorkshire, liverpool, Wiltshire etc. I hope this helps 😊
