Either couldn’t or wouldn’t.

The reason is because you said that you ducked behind a pillar. So couldn’t or wouldn’t puts both parts of the sentence in the past tense.

✓ (1) This pillar is planted in the ground.

Implanted sounds more like a surgical procedure. Use planted like a tree where only the bottom part is put in the ground.

Embedded is better than Implanted because embedded isn't completely burried.

A: You might mean:
"The pillars are all the same height."

Or

"The pillars are equal distances from each other."
