@Talithalise: yes, "saya mengerti" and "aku mengerti" have the exact same meaning.

Which one to use, formal or slang depends on the context or with who you are talking to.

For example, If I talk with my friends I would say "gak tau" or "gak ngerti" instead of "saya tidak mengerti". (I don't understand)

But if I talk to my teacher I would use "saya tidak mengerti/tahu."

Yeah Indonesian is quite tough because the spoken language is quite different than what was taught  in school. :))

When we speak casually, we often omit the subject.

So, I don't understand = saya/tidak mengerti = (aku) gak ngerti.

I know it's complicated. xD

Casual/informal language is a little different in each city. For example in my city (Surabaya) we rarely use "gue" to refer our self. I only use "gue" when I chat with my friends from Jakarta that I met in game.

I think you should learn the formal/polite version first while gradually learn the casual language. :)

Nggak/gak = Tidak (I guess in english it is "nope").

No = tidak, bukan.

Tidak used in verbal sentence and in nominal sentence which describes the subject (Subject + to be + adjective).

Aku often used when you talk to your gf/bf and talk with your friends, and aku used for subtitles and stories. Aku is for female and kids, I think every male only use it to talk to his gf, and make a joke.

No, girls and kids can use "aku", but male can only use "aku" to talk to his gf.

I mean you can use "tidak" in every verbal sentence, but you can only use "tidak" in nominal sentence such as
"I am not tall", "I am not cool", etc

Dia tidak tinggi.

"No, She is not tall"
Tidak, dia tidak tinggi.

"He is not an animator"
saya bukan (seorang) animtor.

"No, he is not an animator"
Bukan, dia bukan (seorang) animator.

I am sure every people in Indonesia understand that language, we often use that language in informal situations.

General rule of thumb for colloquial terms(spoken with friends) 
Lho/lu=kamu
Gue = I
Gak/ga/nggak =no

Note:
Notice how Gak and tidak 
have similar pronunciation? 
'Tidak' also means 'no'. But it just doesn't sound as "slangish" as GA/gak/nggak

Learning formal makes it easy when speaking to say police, immigration and like towards boss and supervisors. Between friends u r better off learning informal/slang in my opinion to avoid sounding not native.
