par for the course = (literally) the number of strokes it should take an average golfer to reach the hole (figuratively) average, the usual, the thing someone expected
Long hours and low pay are par for the course (= the usual) when you work at a restaurant.
John was two hours late for our appointment! That's par for the course (= what I expected) with him, though. He's never punctual.
