"born to an American father and (a) Japanese mother"?

Cathy and Chris Reed were born in the United States to an American father and Japanese mother.

There is no "a" before "Japanese mother" in the sentence. Isn't it necessary? Would it be incorrect it I add "a"?

It would be correct. However it sounds natural both ways to me. I am not certain of the grammatically correct rule in this situation though.
