Australia has lots of different climates!
The majority of people (around 98%) live near the coast. Most major cities have a temperate climate, but there is a lot or variation between cities.
Perth and Sydney, for example, are usually quite sunny whereas Melbourne is usually a little colder and more cloudy. This variation can also affect the fashion of these cities; Melburnians sometimes wear darker coloured clothing and dress less revealingly than some Sydney-siders. Sometimes during summer in these cities, temperatures can reach over 35° or even 40°C. When it's that hot, most people just stay inside but if we do go out we usually just wear a short-sleeved shirt, shorts and thongs (flip-flops) as well as sunscreen. Otherwise most people just wear normal clothing (dresses, jeans, etc.). In Melbourne particularly, it's important to dress in layers (eg. A shirt and jacket) because the weather can often change unexpectedly.
Central Australia (where around 2% of the population lives) is essentially a huge desert. The temperature and weather in this part of the country depends on the time of year, but it's usually very hot and sunny in the daytime and can become quite cold at night. If you're visiting this part of the country I recommend bringing a hat, strong shoes, a long-sleeved shirt (to protect your skin from the sun), etc. as well as other amenities such as sunscreen. Bring a spare pair of shoes and a jacket!
The very north of Australia (in far-north Queensland, for example) has a more tropical climate and only two seasons- a 'wet' season and a 'dry' season. During the wet season, this part of the country is typically very hot and humid, with a higher chance of rain. During the dry season, the air gets cooler (but the temperature still rarely falls below 17°). This part of the country also experiences cyclones during certain parts kf the year.
Right now though, Australia overall is experiencing crazy weather. Right now there are fires, floods, dust storms and droughts in different parts of the country.
Hope this helps! :D

depends where and when you plan on going. assuming you will stay around the Sydney area, in summer it gets extremely hot but our winter doesn't get as cold as say Europe, however it is still very cold

December-Feb is summer in Australia, so bring your shorts and flip flops (us Aussies call them “thongs”!)

To be honest, there aren't many places that actually get cold here. It only snows regularly on one set of mountains, and it had to be the middle of winter. You can get away with just jeans and a hoodie in most places in the winter. But what you have to be really careful of is the sun here. The UV index is no joke. You will get burnt if you are white. Buy SPF 50+ sunscreen when you're here unless it's in June, July, or August. Even on 22°C days, you can feel your skin get crispy.
