了 is just like have done something.
e.g 你吃早饭了吗？= Have you had your breakfast?
Sometimes 了 doesn't have any meaning in a sentence. In that situation, people use 了 just to end the sentence. Like 我睡觉去了 = I'm going to sleep
But specially, when 了 pronounced as “liao”, it usually used as 了解 which means understand.

One more thing. When 了 is le, it can also be an auxiliary word to indicate changing or a new situation. Such as 下雨了 means it's raining.
Also, when 了 pronounced as liǎo, it has much more meaning and is more difficult to learn. But don't worry, we use le more often.

了 is a sign of the past tense or the present perfect tense. Here are two examples. 1. 我吃（过）早饭了。I had breakfast. / I've had breakfast. I suppose the present perfect tense would suggest that you've had breakfast so you don't feel like having something else for breakfast or that sort of thing. Noted that 过 is also a sign of those two tenses. 2. 他死了。 He's dead. I wouldn't translate this one using present perfect tense. So 了 signifies something that happened in the past, it may or may not have something to do with what is happening.
