Domande Giappone
Many people tell me that Japan is the culture about respect and community. My own country (The Netherlands, オランダ) is very individualistic, so I want to understand the 'other side' . I hear from multiple native people from Japan that the community-based culture is not always as pleasant as foreigners tend to think. The thing that I often hear is that the community is so much more important than the individual, that the individuals tend to hide their feelings for the sake of the greater good, even tough it might be emotionally destructive for the individual person. What are your thoughts? Do you agree?

I agree with you completely since young age I’ve never liked hiding my feelings and opinion but was taught to by older family so I don’t get labeled as rude. But in younger generation it is getting very common for people to speak their mind and be their own person, it’s only at home or when around older generation that we act a certain way but especially in school we have free speech with our peers and there are young teachers now that let us speak our mind during class and we get to talk about social issues and the things that truly bother us. And I hope that in the future the kids that are growing up now will learn from our generation that holding things inside isn’t good, and that they will help Japan be a little more free minded.

Also most young people here use international sns like Twitter, instagram, and YouTube now, when before it was very uncommon. And through this we get to learn about life around the world and develop more opinions on things.

to me the perfect thing would be an equilibrium between community and individual in every country. extremes are not good in a way or another.

@ryouru Well, it is the opposite. People here tend to give themselves the advantage over the community. I you feel bad, you say it, and do not go to work. If you hate somebody else, you say it to them. Foreigner tend to see the Dutch as extremely rude because we always say what's on our minds. If you ask people to do something for the community, the first thing people will think is: 'Does it hurt me if I do not help?'. If you want somebody to do something for the community, you'll have to convince him that it is also his individual problem. I assume it is the complete opposite of Japan.
