We were to have had dinner together yesterday evening, but he stood me up. (1)
We should have had dinner together yesterday evening, but he stood me up. (2)
We actually didn’t have dinner together yesterday evening because he was a no-show. (3)
Both “were to have had” in sentence (1) and “should have had” in sentence (2) are used to express a past unreal situation.

i think the word have in this phrase has a function of auxiliar verb of verb had in the present perfect tense. But i am not shure, waiting for the answers.

@Yom Theres been a few ppl telling me about this collins dict. But I am not sure how accurate it is. Since languages change. I believe maybe you can say it both ways.
I have had a headache since yesterday.
We were to have had dinner at my parents last night.
Since were is already the past tense verb I don’t see the need for had in this case.

Have is the root VERB and is generally used alongside the PRONOUNS I / You / We / He and They and PLURAL NOUNS. Generally, have is a PRESENT TENSE word. Has is used alongside the PRONOUNS He / She / It and Who and SINGULAR NOUNS.
