everytime I look up a translation for example: "it's nice to meet you", I get a literal translation. but people say that Vietnamese don't actually say they phrase. my question is..do Vietnamese make small talk? how do they chat with people they don't know if they don't say things like "nice to meet you" or "how are you?"

When we meet each other at the first time. We often says Hello, What your name,Where do you live? or What your job ?
When We became friends.We often says How are you ? after a long time we havent met yet.
We rarely says Nice to meet you.
We often says Thank you when someone did something for you.

I think it depends on where you live in Vietnam. If you live in Southside, you will find that people can easily make small talk with strangers near them without “Hi” or something else but after that they can forget about the conversation. In Northside, people, like my friends, don’t usually talk to strangers. They will make small talk with you when they know you better.
