Without the to in the sentence, it doesn’t make sense. For example if you say “I have been TO the store.” It makes sense, your telling me you went to a store. If you say “I have been the store” your telling me you were the store. I hope this helped

@Orangekingdom usually, 'to' is a preposition to a place or location.
Also, for example:
"I have been Japan" means that person became Japan and is now back to himself/herself which doesn't make sense. How can a human turn into a place?
