Dinner has different meanings depending on your upbringing and where you live in the UK. It is usually the main meal of the day, but some use it for the meal in the middle of the day and others for an evening meal. Those using "dinner" for the middle of the day meal may use "tea" or "supper" for an evening meal.
You can blame it on upper-class Victorians, who moved the main meal of the day to the evening (it has usually been in the middle of the day) so that they had more time to visit each other during the daylight. As a side effect, they introduced "tea" as a light meal in the afternoon as they got hungry waiting for a meal in the evening...

“Supper” is only really used in UK English. It’s also sometimes used in Australia and New Zealand, but mostly by older people.
“Dinner” is the standard US English word, and it’s now used all over the world.
I recommend using “dinner”, because more people will understand it.
