In this sentence "that started with" is the correct answer for the gap, I chose "started with", which is incorrect. Why we have to add that here? Why sometimes there is no that in this kind of sentences? Can you give me some examples?

"That" is something that you always need to add when your express an opinion.
"I felt that you weren't paying attention"
"I liked that you bought me a cake"
"I'm angry that you didn't show up"
I can't think of any example where we wouldn't use "that" in sentences that express your emotion or opinion.
I think you can use "like" instead if you use "to feel"
"I felt like I was being attacked"
