hi, i learned that in the present tense, a verb stem ending with the sound ㅏ/ㅗ takes 아요 at the end, another vowel sound takes 어요.

However, in my course, the verb “to hurt” 아프다 is conjugated like “아파요”. Since it contains the ㅡ sound, why doesn’t it take 어요 as an ending?

Hi! Originally "아퍼요" is correct but in modern times people use "아파요".
Another example is "바쁘다" which means "busy". koreans use "바빠요" in today, not "바뻐요".
