Ceci is used for something close to you and the person you are talking to (= "this" in English)
Cela is ised used for something far from you. (="That" in English)
However, it should be noted that often, when the context allows, there will be a tendency to use "cela" instead of "ceci".
In spoken language or in a familiar written form, the contraction "ça" should be used instead of "cela".
Finally, I would like to inform you that you are in the section about France and not about the French language. Next time, go to the other section instead ;)

we use "this" for something we have not yet mentioned and "that" for something we have already mentioned.
(Ex: Tell him this on my behalf: Thank you!)
(Ex: You teach me this, I did not know it). (° ~ °)!
