It is considered polite to say you're welcome to superiors and strangers. Friends might not care as much.

You don't say it in response to people who sell you something though.

I might sometimes reply non-verbally by nodding my head, give them some sort of acknowledgement. I do think it might be a little rude to not say or do anything at all, unless it's in a situation where you know it's not a genuine thank you. What do I mean by not a genuine thank you? If a person has to say thank you for their job or something like that, then I might not feel bad about not replying, because I know they really don't care, and are just doing their job.

I am a very polite person and I say thank you to just about anything that anyone does for me. It’s always better to be polite then not polite.
Is it a must? Not necessarily. As I said previously, it’s better to be polite. As someone has mentioned in the comments, it’s good to say it to strangers and superiors.
If you want to be casual and still be kind, you can say “Thanks” to a friend. There’s no such thing as being too happy or too kind!
I always say “Your welcome” for just about anything. It’s common courtesy to be respectful to others. If they are nice enough to say “Thank you”, you should always return the favor with “Your welcome”.
Another user made a great point. You don’t usually say “Your welcome” after a cashier says “Thank you”. Happy studies! 🤗

no, we don’t always say that. in fact, i don’t really say “you’re welcome,” very much in response to “thank you.”
here are some things you can say or do:
say “no problem!”
say “of course!”
say “happy to help!”
say “mmhm” or “uh huh!” (this is generally for small courtesies, like if you passed someone a pencil.)
simply nod your head to acknowledge the gratitude (also for small courtesies)
in case you’re wondering, these are not generally considered rude gestures or expressions. older generations may sometimes think it’s disrespectful or ‘lazy.’ however, young generations in particular say these a lot, and they are widely accepted and common replies. so you don’t have to say “you’re welcome” but you should always reply with something, and acknowledge a “thank you” in some way. if someone says “thank you” and you do not respond at all, that is rude
