You could use "an." This is because "LCD" i pronounced "el see dee," which begins with a vowel. If I were writing this, however, I would say "LCD screens use a liquid that becomes dark when an electric current flows across it." It would not be unusual to see a source use "the" either. "The," I feel, identifies the "LCD" screen as a species of item rather than a generalization of any of those items of the set of all such items. Hopefully this makes sense.
