This is a cultural difference between the southern states and the rest of the US.
Southerners call everyone Sweetie, Honey, Suger, Dumplin', etc.
I grew up in California where older people called young people and children Sweetie. A younger person wouldn't say that to someone older than them, and definitely not to a stranger.
I live in the south now, and understand that I need to put my cultural differences aside. :)

@hellohellohell some really close friends maybe. Term 'honey' is more used in romantic context, like when you are in romantic realtionship you call that person 'honey'.

If you call a stranger honey then they might react in a different way bht everyone is different.
