I have a question about “to” infinitive.

As I know, “to” is from the meaning of “in direction of” or “for a purpose of”. So “to” infinitive is used to express what it will happen in a future.

But I can’t make sense well for the sentence below.

“It was great to begin with, but now it’s difficult.”

In the sentence, I think “to begin with” is not expressing a future action but speaker’s experience. So it is different from what I know about “to” infinitive.

I am not sure that I know the meaning of “to” and “to” infinitive.

Please give an advice.
