Because modern Vietnamese uses the Latin alphabet, is it difficult to discern the difference between homonyms?

I bet common ones are obvious but what about more technical language? I know in Chinese there are plenty of homonyms but they all have a unique character and can be differentiated easily.

Sometimes I guess it’s a bit confusing for Vietnamese people as well. Especially people from different regions because they have dialects and the way they pronounce stuff are different as well.

But mainly I think it’s hard for foreigners because of 6 different tones we have.

E.g:
ngư
ngu
ngự
ngụ
ngữ
ngũ
ngừ
ngủ
etc etc

They’re all different and I think this is the hardest part about Vietnamese 😂

I don’t think technical language is as confusing as everyday language though. Because at least you know the context...

I think it is more difficult to tell apart Vietnamese homonyms than Chinese ones since you can only understand their meanings based on the context.
For example: "đường" means sugar and street, two completely different things.

Not to mention, since many Vietnamese words derive from Chinese, you would need to know Chinese to be able to distinguish the meanings of homonyms. My previous example "đường" is actually a phonetic transcription of many Chinese words with different meanings. You can see it here:

It is quite complicated and most of us do not know all the meanings of these derivatives😅.

In Vietnamese there is a term called "từ đồng âm", which indicates a pair of words that are pronounced exactly the same but their meanings have nothing to do with each other. For example, "bàn" can mean either a table (cái bàn) or discuss (bàn bạc) depending on the context of the conversation. I mean as a native we encounter "từ đồng âm" almost all the time, so we know the basic ones since we have been taught in primary school, but of course in the real life it's quite confusing haha
