What's the difference between "È" and "Sta" ? + How can use it?

"È" is the more common translation of English "is". It indicates a status, a location, anything that something or someone <is>. "Sta" instead is used less often and for more specific stuff, for example to state someone's health or to translate the "to be doing".

"Dov'è il libro ?" "È in cucina, sul tavolo" (where's the book ? It's in the kitchen, on the table"
"Dov'è Carlo ?" "Ora è in Francia." (Where's Carlo ? He is France right now.)
"Secondo te è felice ?" (do you think s/he's happy ?)
"È più alto di me" (He's taller than me)

"Sta studiando, non disturbarlo" (he's studying, don't annoy him)
"Sta bene ??" (is s/he fine/well ?)

Finally, "sta" as in "stare" can translate "to remain, to stay", so when you have that in English, you usually find "stare" in Italian, rather than "essere":

"Quando nevica troppo, mio figlio sta a casa e non va a scuola." (when it snows too much, my son stays home and doesn't go to school)
