de = of / to / from (and different other words depending on the context). Sometimes, it isn't translate in english.
For example:
"J'ai envie de sortir" = "I want to go out".
"Je viens de France" = "I come from France"
"Un peu de tout" = "A little bit of everything".
"Je n'ai plus de pain" = "I have no more bread".
"du" = "of the" for singular male nouns.
In fact, "du" is the contraction of "de" and "le".
In french, we rarely use a noun without any article. We use often with either a definite article, or an indefinite article.
So, when we say "de" + noun, we often have to put an article between "de" and this noun. If this noun is singular feminine and we want to use a definite article, we put "la". ("la" = "the", for singular feminine words").
In this case, we say "de la". For exemple:
"because of the rain" = "à cause de la pluie"
"Do you have lemonade?" = "As-tu de la limonade ?"
However, when the noun is maculine, we should use the definite article "le". But, because of the evolution of the language, we never say "de le": we say "du".
For example:
"because of the cold" = "à cause du froid"
"Do you have chocolate?" = "As-tu du chocolat ?"
In the same way, "des" is the contraction of "de" and "les".
So, "des" = "of the" for plural nouns. Indeed, "les" is the plural of "le" and "la".
For example:
"because of the works" = "à cause des travaux"
"Do you have any pets?" = "As-tu des animaux ?"
I hope my explanations are understandable...
