Is it true that Italians place little significance on the Italian languages/dialects (e.g. Venezian Ligurian etc) and do not actively protect them?

@matt-harrington to a certain extent, I would say it's true. There are people that use dialect more often than others and so teach their dialect to their children and grandchildren. However, there are people that simply do not find a dialects useful, so even though they might understand it they don't speak it. There is not an organization that protects dialects, as far as I know

But I do believe that there should be. The problem is that dialects in Italy are countless, it would be really hard for an organization to keep track of all of them. There could be a town speaking one dialect and another town 2km away speaking an entirely different one

Younger generations don't speak as much dialect as the older ones, many people understand it perfectly because their parents speak dialect with them, but rarely use it, so we're progressively abandoning dialects. That's too bad, because they are a big part of our culture... Some newspapers write some articles in dialect, for instance the newspaper I usually read has a section in "ladino", a dialect spoken in the very North of Veneto. But still, I think it'd be better to give them more importance.

As always you must take North and South separately: in the Northern part dialects as proper languages have been discouraged and they survive with some particular phrases or words. Also, many dumb people tried to associate speaking dialect with being of a certain political party. In Southern Italy people tend to know their dialect better than the Italian language.

unfortunately, yes. especially the younger generations
