i don't really know how to explain it in English, but I try my best.

there is not really a difference between "nog' and "nog steeds", it depens how you used it.

In this sentence you can use both:
I'm still with Peter.
Ik ben nog (steeds) bij Peter.

and this is how you answer:
Are you still with him?
Ben je nog steeds bij hem?
or
still?
Nog steeds?

if you only say "nog", it's wrong.

Here's a short addition to what was explained by @esmeraldadevries

Both 'nog' and 'nog steeds' mean 'still', but 'steeds' (= continuously, all the time) adds a time aspect.
* Ik wacht nog.
(I'm still waiting)
* Ik wacht nog steeds.
(I've waited for a long
time and I'm still
waiting)

'Toch' means: contrary to what was said, thought, written, felt and so on.
* Ik wacht toch.
(I had made up my mind
not to wait for him again,
but I'm waiting
nevertheless)
