Usually, it is used when someone does something that they are famous for doing or something that is an example of the person’s personality or character. Then, when other people are talking about what that person did, they will say “that’s ____ for you” to mean that what the person did was normal for that person or describes them well.

For example:

Jenny steals from a charity.

Bob and Tom are talking about Jenny and how she is selfish and doesn’t care about others.

Bob tells Tom that Jenny stole from a charity.

Tom then says, “That’s Jenny for you” (meaning that he is not surprised that Jenny stole from a charity because it is something he would expect from her because he and Bob already think of her as selfish)
