I could really use some help with some questions on my textbooks. It's about filling the blanks with modal verb in the past tense.

My answers are:

2. would't have

3. shouldn't have

4. may haven't

6. shouldn't have

8. shouldn't have/ could have

The screenshot was from my friend, we're having problem getting the answers right.

Thank a lot, bro. In our class the teacher also mention (can't have) as part of modal verbs of probability in the past. Do you think it can be applied in any of the sentences above?

@shuiyi116801 I suppose for the last sentence the combination could be can't have and would have. If someone was lying about going to some dangerous place to swim and you were calling them out on their lie.

How about the first sentence? When the speaker mentioned that he did tell the other person about Joe's party. Perhaps the other person previously lied or simply forgot; thus told the speaker that he didn't heard anything about the party, and the speaker used "can't have" to express disagreement to the other guy's statement. Do you think this makes sense?

I see, thank you for ur response. It's just that the teacher said my friend got only 1/9 answers right. That's what confuses me. Perhaps the teacher has mistaken, cause it seems my friend got at least 2~3 answers right.
