no, -nya and -i is different. -nya is actually kind of complicated to explain, but Iet me try my best. 
Basicly, -nya can be a pronouns which stands for "dia" (her/his/him/it).
First, -nya can state the ownership of a subject. It is similar with -ku and -mu.
- Buku aku = bukuku (my book)
- Buku kamu = bukumu (your book)
- Buku dia = bukunya (her/his book)
- Senyumnya (Her/his smile)
- Ini adalah hidupnya (this is her/his life)

Second, -nya as an object for the sentence.
- Aku melihatnya melewatiku (I saw her/him passing me)
- Aku mengirimkan bunga padanya (I sent a flower to her/him)

Third, -nya as forming adverbs.
Sepertinya akan hujan hari ini (It looks like it will rain today)
- Biasanya aku naik mobil untuk pergi ke kantor (Usually I ride a car to go to office)
- Aku mencintaimu selamanya (I love you forever)

Fourth, -nya as pointer. I don't know how to describe this but let see the examples.
- Penyakit ini belum ada obatnya (This disease has no medicine to cure it) -nya here stands for "to cure it".
- Rumah kami besar, kamar-kamarnya luas (our house is big, the rooms are wide) In this sentence, kamar-kamarnya = the rooms of our house, so -nya stands for our house.

Fifth, together with other additions se- and Indonesian repeat word (if you know what I mean), -nya can state as forming adverbs which expressing the highest degree of the words.
- Sepintar-pintarnya seorang manusia, dia pasti pernah melakukan kesalahan (As smart as possible a human being is, he must have made a mistake) sepintar-pintarnya = as smart as possible.
- Larilah sekencang-kencangnya (Run as fast as possible)

In case of the first and the second you can use -nya only if you already mention what it stands before use it.
- Ini adikku. Hobinya adalah menyanyi. (This is my brother. His hobby is singing)

"nya" is different from "I" which means saya

"nya" can be considered as possesive particle.

my book = bukunya saya. or more commonly bukuku
dr. Smith's book = bukunya dr. Smith
Dani's pencil = pensilnya Dani
John's handphone = Handphonenya John

So basically "nya" when considered as possesive particle can be translated into " 's "

Simply, -nya is a possessive form, it can be possessive noun, possessive pronoun, possessive adjective or determiner.

FYI, there is a rule or an agreement to use this possessive form if you find human as a subject; you can only use -nya on 3rd person singular as determiner, it is ineligible to use it on 1st person singular and 2nd person singular or plural person as determiner, because there is another possessive form (determiner) that eligible to it such as -ku, -mu, and etc. 
For example :
- Baju itu milikku (1st person singular)
- Baju itu milikmu (2nd person singular)
- Baju itu milik mereka (plural)
