Domande Svezia
Hi! Could anyone try to explain to me, what Jantelag is? I don’t really get the idea of it and wikipedia didn’t help me with understanding it too much. Also, do Swedes actually stick to this “Law of Jante”?
Thanks in advance!

knowing swedish people I think they actually care about it. Jantelagen is about making sure you never show you're better than others, even if you are. You can't brag of course but you even draw attention away from the fact you are the best at something. there's a funny interview with Alexander Skarsgård where the interviewer met him at the party after the Emmy prizes were given to actors, but the interviewer didn't know who won yet because he was organising. At this party, he asked Alexander skarsgård and ask him if he was having fun. they had a conversation where the actor never told him he had been the one to win the Emmy, which made the interviewer feel silly when he found out. in the interview he explains jantelagen. Some Swedish people I know are very successful or put a lot of commitment in school and sport, but they always play it down talking about others who are better, or like it's no big deal. Bragging would be very distasteful and even being an overconfident cocky type could make you look like a fool. This is something you see a lot in ex-communist countries, where everyone always plays down their success that is percieved as unfair, but in Sweden it's probably an even older tradition, maybe someone can explain where it comes from.

@Meryyy2000 woow that’s weird🤭 I mean, in Poland we also do not tend to talk about our achievements, only when asked by somebody else. However, Swedes seem to be kind of afraid and embarrased, which is not how people usually feel about their success. Anyway, thank you for the response, I finally understand the whole idea of Jantelagen!

It means you're modest and try your best not to attract attention. Usually this involves self-depricating humour. We like to think of ourselves as losers. Men are not very macho (the 'typical' swedish man is quite 'feminine'). Basically, there are no "winners", each individual is an individual, but also just a part of the socialist collective.

I think a lot of it comes from Swedens long history of union working class people with socialistic views. To them it was almost a sin to be rich, so in order to not be an outcast from the group, it became an end in itself to be average. It wasnt really about humility. But jantelagen applies a lot less nowdays.

@AlexKrycek Yeah, I agree that it applies a lot less. I was very surprised to find out that the very annoying song "We Are the Heroes" that was playing all over town was the Swedish winner of a Eurovision song contest. Where is the Jante there? we aren't heroes....

@o07 Yeah political correctness and the rise of leftist views over the past years has tried to breathe new life to jantelagen. Its a sad development and I hope people know better than to adopt such a soulcrushing mindset.

It is also stronger in rural communities than in large cities. When people move to Stockholm or another big city and try to "make it big", that is often frowned upon.
I don't think it's only negative, though. It's quite healthy to look at yourself from the outside and realise you're not larger than life, and that is OK.
