What’s the general awareness of non-binary and it’s existence overall in Germany. Also how would you refer to them pronouns wise along with how to deal with talking about them because German is a gendered language.

I'm ashamed to say this, but it doesn't seem like there is much awareness, or rather, it feels like people are being aware of it and think they are considerate, but they are really not. A German transexual friend of mine wanted to transition from a male to a female body, but when she asked us to call her "she" instead of "he", most people just kept calling her "he", or light-heartedly corrected themselves a moment later after realizing. But it kept happening.

Then again, at my university, a fellow student in some of my seminars, transitioned from a female to a male body, and no one seems to have any problems addressing him with his preferred pronoun "he"

As for what to do when someone doesn't like "er" oder "sie", the male and female pronouns, it's rare to see people look for an alternative, I'd say. Personally, I opt to just use their name most of the time, even if that is somewhat unnatural in German sometimes, since you would usually use personal pronouns 99% of the time.

There are some publicly funded YouTube channels (FUNK Kollektiv) which try to educate the general public about this issue, but it's still far from common knowledge.

Tim_sc as side note the term transsexual is considered outdated and people use transgender instead. Thank you so much 😊 for answer my question.

@creativeusername1231 i live in switzerland and i don’t give 2 shits if they have. changed or not. im calling them Sie because i don’t know them. its formal.

@creativeusername1231 See, good example how I still fuck up and need to learn so much more before I do this properly..Now consider sometwice twice my age (I'm 21)....I hope it gets better, but I just don't see it yet

Well, German has three genders, but "es" is rarely used for people. Only when it's grammatically required, like for "das Kind".
