Overall, we don't get along very well now. There are many sorrowful memories both historically and diplomatically, and because of having similar political propaganda influenced, they always evaluate each other as irreconcilable neighbors.
Some Japanese people accept Korean culture regardless of history, but Korea still cares about the damage they suffered during the colonial period. because it was so humiliating and insulting, Korean people has a strong hatred for Japan's right-wingers(with Abe Shinjo Ministry), who do not fully repent for this.
Only after 1998 that 50 years after World War II that Japanese culture was opened. As the Japanese culture began to open in earnest in the 2000s for more than a decade, the distance between Japan and Japanese people was gradually decreasing among the younger generation.
However, the change in Japan's policy on import material guidelines has turned into a diplomatic row with Japan, and historically been at odds with the UNESCO listing of Japanese facilities where Korean forced laborers worked during the war. The current confrontation does not seem to be urgent for each other, so it will remain an awkward relationship for a while with the COVID 19 Pandemic period.

@DannyJoung I see! Thank you for taking time to carefully explain. My impression was that its more of a problem between politics than the general citizens of Korea and Japan. Now with elderly people, perhaps its way different. I am curious— would you say the tension is mostly between politics are more so the general public of Korea and Japan, or both? Again, I really appreciate your answer. We hardly ever hear about any of this in school, or on the news.

The current conflict between Korea and Japan tension from political dynamics. Also, since Japan has grown more burdensome to Korea than in the past, Japan seems to continue to exercise this political influence in a way that keeps Korea in check.
Political tensions soon go through the media of both countries, bringing a very provocative and public message to both nations. Therefore, the people of both countries will accept the current situation as intended by the media and the government, and Korea, which has a relatively painful history of colonialism, will have to react sensitively to Japan's move.
It can be said that the history of the past which has not been liquidated, becomes a battle between descendants. It is normal that you have never heard of the relationship between Korea and Japan because Western schools do not teach them in depth. Like we don't know much about your ancestors in the Independence war from the U.K.
There is one thing that I Known your history, American President Theodore Roosevelt condoned Imperial Japan's rule over Joseon in the past and played a role in spreading imperialism in Asia.
So, as the historical roots of the conflict between Korea and Japan, the U.S. policy toward the Korean Peninsula has always been greatly influenced both countries. Like President Woodrow Wilson's 'self-determination for each country'.
It's the same now. Trump's offer to reduce the number of U.S. troops in South Korea also has a significant impact on the situation on the Korean Peninsula. Historically, Korea is one of the countries that has suffered considerable damage due to America's lax or uninterested Asian policy.
Not only Theodore Roosevelt, but the next presidents judged this Far East Asian country next to Japan for purposes nothing more than strategic value. Like West Germany in the Far East of Europe in the cold war era, it was one of the alliances needed to keep Russia and China in check and to deploy strategic weapons.
In addition, the United States had condoned the military regime's coups in South Korea and their undemocratic activities, and in return offered absolute friendship with the United States.(I mean, while Korea sustains an "undemocratic" status, the United States has acquired various interests on the Korean Peninsula, including defense business.) as a result, Democracy in Korea was isolated for a long time.

Usually, we say we don't like Japan that much but we use a lot of made in Japan goods
