Hi I have a grammatical question,

for this sentence,

"The fact that we haven't jubilantly included any of these marks, and ‘hashtagging’ in speech is clunky, suggests that, perhaps, the ambiguity of texts is something important and necessary."

Why is it “The fact is clunky, suggests that…”?

What’s the subject there? Or any other components that should make the sentence grammatically understandable?

‘hashtagging’ in speech is clunky

This is clearly marked as a separate clause.

@thetrees Thanks! But I'm still a bit confused. How is it "suggestS" though? If two clauses before "suggests"

The fact that ........., and ......

This creates a parallel structure. Within a parallel structure, you can have as many clauses as you want.

Everything before "suggests" is to be taken into consideration.

@thetrees Yeah, my understanding is more like "A and B suggest…" instead of "A and B suggestS…"

@Pumpk-a-boo This has to do with the MAIN CLAUSE (not the subordinate clauses).
The simple subject of main clause = FACT
The simple verb of main clause = SUGGESTS
FACT + SUGGESTS is the correct subject+verb agreement

The subordinate clauses can cloud the picture, so we isolate the main clause:

The fact that we haven't jubilantly included any of these marks [this is the subject, a very long ‘noun clause’] suggests that, perhaps, the ambiguity of texts is something important and necessary." — fact (simple subject) suggests (simple verb)

@ladybug Thank you! Now I get it! I was confused by the two clauses following "fact", "That we…" and "hashtagging…".

btw, did you have to learn this in primary school or middle school?
