Is it common for Dutch people to speak German? I'm asking because Dutch and German are quite similar so it shouldn't be too difficult to learn. I also heard that only older people in NL tend to speak German, the younger generation speaks mostly English and is not willing to learn German.

well quite a lot of people speak german here (i think it's the second most spoken language in the netherlands after english) ☺

We learn German at school but we don't hear it often enough in everyday life. So I would say we lose part of what we know after we leave school.
I think Germany doesn't hold much interest for young people living in The Netherlands. Their world revolves mainly around social media and music, and a large part of that takes place in English.
English is by far the most popular language in The Netherlands.
In the eastern part of the country, however, people tend to visit Germany quite often for holidays and shopping. So one would expect them to get more practice and speak better German. But, German is more difficult than Dutch grammarwise, so I wonder if a lot of Dutch people speak it well. And by that I don't mean speak it fast but speak it with proper grammar 😉
