When should I use "as ... as"? Like "as much as", "as long as", "as fast as", "as soon as".

@ste_57 Use these mainly when comparing two things—usually when someone is not familiar with one thing, so you are comparing it to something more familiar. I use this a lot when explaining new things to my kids to help them understand the size, cost, or length of time of something.

Some examples:

The snake was as long as my car. (The person I am speaking to did not see the snake, but they can see the size of my car.)

That bird ran as fast as my cat.

That car costs as much as my house! (If someone does not know how expensive the car really is, comparing it to the cost of my house gives a good perspective.)

We can leave as soon as I finish putting on my shoes. (This one is a little different. It really means when a certain task or event has taken place, that is when the next part takes place.)

These are conjunctions. They all have multiple different meanings and uses. ^ ^

Ex:
"I did it as much as possible." (This phrase "as much as possible" is used when you do something to the extent of your capability)
"As much as I liked drawing, I was very bad at it." (This is another way to say "even though....")

"As long as the door is locked, no one can come in." (During the whole time something is what it is....)
"They have been here for as long as we can remember."
"The snake was as long as my leg."

"He was as fast as lightning!" (Another way of saying like, mostly used in similes)

"I finished my homework as soon as I possibly could."
"As soon as I finished work, I went home."
(This is used when you say you will finish something at the earliest possible moment.)
