Hello everyone, this sentence (严密地遮盖住或封住) means “To tightly cover or seal”. If 遮盖 means to cover, what purpose does 住 have and why it comes after the verb? As far as I know 住 means to “live; reside or stop”. It just doesn’t seem to fit in with the overall meaning of the sentence. Is it a verb compliment like 得 or does it have some aspectual function like 了？
Note: I know that this “住” isn’t obligated to be there and can be omitted but I still want to know what purpose it serve in this sentence. Cuz every now and then I see weird stuff like this come up when reading or listening to casual speech.

I think this 住 here stands for a condition that you seal it completely. ( It is more often used and more exclusive in the meaning " seal" than "cover")

Personally, I don't think 住 can be omitted. It is kinda weird to say 严密地盖. If you want to skip it, you should say 严密地盖上（in this case 住 is no longer necessary)
when it comes to the meaning cover :
盖被子✅
盖住被子❎
It shares certain similarity with 了 since both imply the condition of the action.
(了：have done，住：completely)

Oh wow. So I guess it has to do with whether the word has an object or not. I don’t know.
At first I was told this language is like English, same svo structure, no conjugation, so on. But the more I get deeper in the language, the more I see how different it is from English.

@bitterorlando: It will be much more complicated if you go deeper.
the use of 那个，了，过，儿，住，完，这/那，呢 is more like a using habit than something you can find a pattern and memorize all of them. ( the advanced grammar of Chinese is really unfriendly to non-native speakers.)
