Pollution is when something is added to the environment that is harmful or poisonous to living organisms. 

Smoke or dust in the air is a type of pollution. Long-term exposure to air pollution can lead to chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer and other diseases.

Sewage in drinking water is another type of pollution, as it can make people ill because it contains germs and viruses. More than one billion people lack access to clean water, putting them at risk of contracting deadly diseases. 

Pollution may muddy landscapes, poison soils and waterways, or kill plants and animals.
