Are there any disadvantages for a foreign woman who legally marries a Japanese man in Japan but does not change her foreign last name to the husband’s Japanese last name? They have a marriage certificate in Japan and it’s only valid in Japan.

You mean her husband changed his last name to his spouse’s? I don’t think there’s any particular disadvantages regarding that.

Some conservative people may judge them but I don’t think people would care most of the time.

@tet1017 No, I mean the foreigner wife did not change her last name to the Japanese husband’s last name. For example, Sarah John is not changed to Sarah Suzuki.

I mean, in Japan’s law, a husband or wife has to change their last name to the spouse’s name.

Therefore, if the wife is not changing her name, that automatically means that her spouse has changed his.

@tet1017 Oh wow really? That’s interesting! In Germany you don’t have to change your last name when you marry somebody

Yes, it is true. I think there’s no logical explanation why the government should not allow people to keep their last name when they get married.

I believe that’s predominantly because the current party in power is conservative and they think it’s against “traditional family value of Japan”.
