In Biography of Benjamin Franklin. What does this sentence mean? I can't understand it. Could you explain in a way that easier to be understood?

Inserted into the sentence about his pilgrim's progress up Market Street is a phrase, written in the margin, in which he notes that he passed by the house of his future wife, Deborah Read, and that "she, standing at the door, saw me and thought I made, as I certainly did, a most awkward ridiculous appearance"

Sure. As Franklin was walking up Market Street in Philadelphia, he passed by the house of Deborah Reed, who was standing outside. And for some reason, he thought that he looked ridiculous or silly. Meaning, he walked in front of this girl and was embarrassed about the way he looked.

I can understand why this sentence might be confusing. In describing the scene, the author of the biography quotes Franklin, who must’ve written about this incident. So it’s a description within a description.
