Do you usually use the sentences below in spoken English?
I thought that these are old expressions.

I may go shopping on Friday.
He may go swimming on Sunday.
May I ask a question?

Yes, these are all still used often. In casual conversation, some people might use "can I" instead of "may I," but this is grammatically incorrect. "Might" is sometimes used instead of "may" when making a statement, but the nuances are different. "I may go" = "I will probably go." "I might go" = "I am not sure if I will go."

"May" can be either an older, less common word for "can" or "to be allowed to," or a more common word for "might."
"I may go shopping" can mean either "I might go shopping" (which is the more common use) or "I am allowed to go shopping." (which does sound slightly old-fashioned).
