Why is the verb 하다 followed by 였어요 and not 았어요 in past tense? Shouldn’t the bright vowel + verb stem (ㅏ) in 하다 make it 았어요?

Past tense of 하다 is 했다, 했어요, 하였어요, 하였습니다.

For other usual verbs like 먹다, 보다 its true that past form should go 먹었다, 보았다 so no 였다

But for 하다 it could be called an exception. 😅😅

Can you give an example sentence? I dont get exactly when 였어요 is following 하다

Because 였어요 is a past tense of „to be“ for adjectives and nouns but not for verbs.

And 하다 could be a verb „to do“ or an ending for adjectives, i suspect this is the case which confused you but im not sure.

@polopola ohh alright, you’re right I’m sure this is why I got confused, I’m using a book to study and it says “verb 하다 is followed by 았어요 in the past tense, is false” and that it’s 였어요, which confused me.
