The imperfect (l'imparfait)"j etudiais" is used for a description, to speak of a habit, of an action in progress in the past: Quand j'étais enfant j'étudiais le français à l'école ... For the past tense (passé composé) ( j ai étudié), the action is precise and complete. Quand je suis parti en France en 2020, j ai étudié le français .
