Che cosa significa "quarter hours/semester hours" as of academic terms. ?

I read the wiki says;
Academic credit earned in a quarter system is measured in quarter hours. Three quarters = two semesters, so 2 semester hours = 3 quarter hours. Thus, a baccalaureate degree typically requires a minimum of 180 quarter hours or 120 semester hours (viz. 180 x 2/3 = 120).

And I knew that a student in the U.S needs 12quarters/8 semesters in 4 years.

And then, Academic credit is measured by "quarter/semester hours"??? What on earth is this?

It means academic time as in the time an academic activity is done. For example, let’s say my university classes for the semester (two months of classes as far as I know) are two hours a day but those hours can be separated in 30 minutes each class and some breaks within those 30 minutes.
In this text is basically saying the same but more complex, referring to another way of the same “academic” time (quarter hours in here).
To be honest that’s what I understood but I’m not sure if that what’s the text is referring to :/
