They're basically the same but 'seperti' is more widely spoken and written while 'layaknya' is more widely written. I like to think that 'layaknya' is the archaic version of seperti, it's not but sounds like it.
So if you want to write something that sounds more poetic, you can use 'layaknya'. For example:
"Selendang bidadari itu terbang layaknya kereta kencana menuju mentari."
Sounds more poetic than
"Selendang bidadari itu terbang seperti kereta kencana menuju mentari."

@leeong Idk but maybe it's wrong. Because both layaknya and seperti mean like and I don't think you can use both of them in a sentence like that

@leeong You're welcome, Glad I was able to help you answer that :) Those are called "pemborosan kata" in indonesian. For example the word "sangat" and "sekali", both mean "very". In spoken, people say
- Perkembangannya sangat cepat sekali (literally means the development is very very fast)
In writing, that's considered wrong because it sounds redundant
