It depends on the context around 方, and I couldn't imagine the case when 方 is by itself. If you have any example, please tell me where you see that.

@Kiikurage Sometimes I see 方 used as “person” and the reading is sometimes ほう and sometimes かた. In the sentence 「そちらの方は?」it is かた. Is there a difference between using one reading over the other?

I see. For person, we always read 方 as かた.
Actually, in old-fashioned Japanese, 方 for person is read as ほう (almost always used as そのほう), but we don't use today.
