(1) John likes the portrait of himself.
(2) John likes a portrait of himself.
(3) John likes the portrait of him.

Hi, I am a student studying English sentence structures at the university. According to what I learned, (2) is right while (1) is not, and (1) should be modified into (3). However, I really feel that (1) is also acceptable. How do you feel? If you feel any slight awkwardness reading (1), I will appreciate it. 'Himself' and 'him' of those three sentences all indicate John in the same sentence.
