“斤”is a local weight unit in China and its value varies over time. Nowadays “斤” equals to 500g （in mainland） or 600g （in Taiwan province）.
“公斤” is a localized expression of kilogram（千克）.

We use “斤” in daily life,often verbally. “公斤” is the same as kilogram and is more official. For example,when you buy vegetables in market in China,you would ask “多少钱一斤？”. When you’re filling a form,weight is usually measured in “公斤”.
