As I was reading a novel I came across the sentence below.
Still, I expect that somewhere in the country lives a Republican senator, heavily backed by the religious right, organizing a bid to ban the use of public funds for just such diagrams.
I'm not sure what the part "organizing a bid" means.
Could anyone clarify this for me?

In this use, “bid” means a plan, an attempt or a try. So the senator with organize people to try or attempt to ban the use of public funds for something.
