Hi! The difference is a little complicated.
"Wish" is usually something that you want to happen, but seems far off.
Ex. I wished for rain, but it was summer.
Ex. I wish I were rich, my life would be easier.
"Desire" is usually used when you want something really badly which is in your reach.
Ex. Her desire to eat the chicken was huge. She wanted it so badly, but she had to wait for everyone else to sit down.
(This next example is the most common use of the word, but it has mildly inappropriate connotations)
Ex. He felt a great desire for the other woman, wanting to hold her close and feels her.
Both words are nouns which can be used as verbs. A wish is what you have, wishing is what you do. A desire is what you have, desiring is what you do.
