"Resident" and "inhabitant" are basically synonyms 同義詞 and usually interchangeable 通用; "Residence" is a noun 名詞 related to "resident" and it can refer 指 to any type of home; because of this, "resident" is more often used to refer to people living in a home, although using "inhabitant" is not wrong, just less common. Both can also be used referring to a country/city:
This country has a million residents. — More emphasis 強調on the people living in a home that is in the country.
This country has a million inhabitants. — More general; the people exist in the country.
Both words also have a related verb 動詞 : "reside (in)" and "inhabit." "Reside (in)" is extremely close to "live in," but just sounds more formal; "Inhabit" can be used this way too, but it is uncommon:
He resides in a beautiful house. — Common, slightly formal
He lives in a beautiful house. — Most common, neither formal nor informal
He inhabits a beautiful house. — Uncommon, formal
He inhabits in a beautiful house. — Wrong. "Inhabit" is a transitive verb 及物動詞 and so it is not followed by "in."
"Inhabit" is often used more generally referring to living or existing in a location. It is used more than "reside" to refer to animals:
Lots of fish inhabit the ocean. — Common, slightly formal
Lots of fish reside in the ocean. — Uncommon, slightly formal, but still correct
Lots of fish live in the ocean. — Common, slightly informal
