과는 과목(subject)을 이야기하는데 문과는 주로 사회,문학,국어,소설,경영 등의 과목을 다루는 과라 하면 이과는 수학,물리,생물,과학 등을 말하죠. 보통 한국 교육 과정이 고등학교 때에 그렇게 나뉘어요.

When Korean students get highschool, they choose what they learn for a Korean SAT. if you choose 문과, you will study Korean, math(not much calculus), English, Korean history. and also choose 2 subjects among politics, economics, ethics and so on. if you choose 이과, you will study Korean, math (including intensified calculus), english and korean history. and you have to choose 2 subjects among some science subjects like physics 1, physics 2, and chemistry 2.
usually ppl who want to be a doctor, engineer, or scientist choose 이과, ppl who want to be a lawyer, social worker, financial specialist, nurse(이과 is considered as hard competition, so many students choose 문과 for nursing because many nursing schools dont have distinguish between 문과 and 이과)

Those are a kind of curriculums. In South Korea, high school students have to choose either 문과 or 이과, especially in their second year. In 문과, you learn socialogy or something deeply. In 이과, you learn science and math deeply.
